Exhibition with Gallery Beck & Eggeling, Düsseldorf 2024

“Colour Turns Me On”

The exhibition "Colour Turns Me On" at the gallery Beck & Eggeling in Düsseldorf is a vivid celebration of Colour Field painting, marking the gallery's 30th anniversary. It presents the works of Sylke von Gaza, Hal Busse, Ulrike Arnold, and Rossella Vasta, each offering unique interpretations of this art form. The show explores the dynamic use of colour as a primary means of expression, inviting viewers to experience the emotive and sensory impact of hues and shades in contemporary art. This exhibition marks the first collaboration between Sylke von Gaza and Beck & Eggeling Gallery.

For 30 years Beck & Eggeling has contributed diversely to cultural life in Germany and beyond with a programme of high-quality works of Impressionism, German Expressionism, Heinz Mack-ZERO as well as contemporary art, and has established itself as one of the leading galleries in the international art market. The gallery's involvement in fairs like TEFAF in New York and Maastricht, The Armory Show, ART COLOGNE, and Art Basel in Miami Beach, among others, showcases its commitment to presenting a diverse range of artistic talents on the global stage. Furthermore, with over 100 publications through their in-house art publishers, Beck & Eggeling enriches the art discourse and knowledge about the artists they represent, emphasizing their role in shaping the social discourse of our time through art. Beck & Eggeling International Fine Art was founded in 1994 by Dr. Ute Eggeling and Michael Beck in Leipzig. By the turn of the millennium, the founders made a strategic move to Düsseldorf. The gallery's expansion continued with the opening of additional premises in Düsseldorf in 2006, designed to offer a loft-like space with natural skylight, ideal for contemporary art exhibitions. This space, a former print studio, provides the platform for this exhibition “Colour Turns Me On”.

With her mastery in abstract colour layering, Sylke von Gaza is among the most expressive painters of the contemporary era. One of Sylke von Gaza's artworks featured in the exhibition is titled "Purple Venice Veil Painting" and was created in 2011 in her atelier space overlooking the Canale Grande in Venice. It showcases a bright purple canvas marked by textural vertical striations. The technique results in a rich tapestry of shades and tactile qualities, giving the piece a sense of depth and movement. The repetitive vertical strokes vary in thickness and intensity, suggesting a veil-like appearance that is both concealing and revealing. The interplay of light and shadow, along with the singular colour palette, evokes a contemplative mood, inviting the viewer to delve beyond the surface. The artist’s time spent in the lagoon city - the undisputed capital of colour in the history of painting - over several years has left its mark: Sylke von Gaza's "Purple Venice Veil Painting" can be seen as a contemporary echo of the Venetian colourist tradition, which is renowned for its vibrant use of colour and light. Venetian painters like Titian, Tintoretto, and Veronese were masters of colour, using it to create depth, emotion, and luminosity. Von Gaza's delicate layering of colour could be seen as a modern-day continuum of this tradition. Her painting, through its texture and hue, captures the elusive yet sublime essence of Venice — a city known for its interplay of light with water and its rich, opulent history of art.

The exhibition "Colour Turns Me On" at Beck & Eggeling in Düsseldorf, running from February 2 to March 16, 2024, celebrates the gallery's 30th anniversary. An artist talk with Sylke von Gaza, Rossella Vasta, and Ulrike Arnold will be held at the gallery.
